CHAPTER 2
A few years after that, there was a guidance counselor at a small Christian school in Indiana who told this kid that if he wanted to graduate college, he’d have to take some kind of arts course. Kid thought to himself, “Self, you been listenin to all them Chris Knight songs. They got this course called ‘Intro to Guitar.’ Maybe ya oughtta take that course, maybe learn one or two of them songs, then graduate.” So he did.
But as he was learnin how to jump from an Am chord to an E chord, graduatin all the while, this same kid started puttin words to them chords. He started makin up songs all on his own. That is, if you don’t count the help from his roommate (see, the truth is, this kid started writing songs before he could play those chords real good…so at first, he’d have to sing them to his roommate to figure out the chords. His roommate knew how to play all the chords real good. Anyways, I digress…).

video of the day
During the show, there was a woman sitting right up front, who was hanging on every word throughout the night, with a huge smile. Then I played “Ring of Roses.” When I looked up toward the end of the song, she had tears streaming down her face.
At the end of the night, I stood out by the merch table, thanking everyone for coming. This same lady walked up and gave me the biggest hug, told me how much she loved the show, but “hated that one song! It made me cry!”…she was talking about “Ring of Roses”…
There’s a story that goes with writing this song…and I included it on the front end of the video:
The entire show is available on DVD at our Merch Store
before we get to the final song of the day…
Let’s hear what my dad, and my girlfriend’s mom, had to say about the show:
“That song about the bicyle - you can throw it in the garbage.”
(And we did…you will not find it on this album…)
I reckon we can always count on a dad to be blunt and a mom to be encouraging.
(UPDATE: My girlfriend’s mom is now my wife’s mom)
bonus round
Let’s do one more song before we get to the giveaways and whatnot. For the first time, “Dandelion Woman” is now available in a live acoustic version. And for those of you who haven’t heard the backstory before, it’s on the front-end of this video:
The entire show is available on DVD at our Merch Store
